The Romans built a small settlement with a bridge in the center, but the small town only grew up around 1300 AD.
Today's center dates back to the Middle Ages, and it's surrounded by a protecting wall with four entrances to the city, three of which are still intact.
At the end of 1800, the city began to become a spa town, where the Austrian Empress Sissi, Franz Kafka and Ezra Pound were on holiday.
Surrounded by mountains from 1500 to 3200 mt, in 2017 celebrates its 700th anniversary since its founding, offers a hippodrome among the most renowned in Italy, the very famous spas, walks between apple fields and beautiful vineyards in spring with all the trees in Flower, garden of Castel Trauttmansdorff, summer concerts, racing, and of course shopping in prestigious shops.
In winter many ski resorts are just a few minutes drive away (Merano 2000, Val d'Ultimo, Val Senales, Dolomites), in the summer there are many possibilities for mountain walks (Val Martello, Val di Fosse, Avelengo, Val Passiria and Val Venosta).
As events especially stand out the Christmas Market during Advent, renowned destination for many italian and foreign tourists, the Grape Festival in October, highlight of the Merano tourism season, and the Merano Wine Festival early in November, a must for the food and wine lovers.
